Overview of the Seal of Biliteracy

Students with the State Seal of Biliteracy receive WSU credit for beginning and intermediate language courses (12 credits, or 4 classes coded with numbers 101, 102, 210 and 211).

You can use these credits towards your total (120) credits required for graduation, LASC, a major, and/or a minor. For instance, a Spanish major or minor, Latin American and Latinx Studies minor, Public Health major, and African and African Diaspora Studies Minor all accept some of these credits.

FAQ

  • According to the MA Department of Education, “The State Seal of Biliteracy is an award provided by state approved districts that recognizes high school graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and a world language in recognition of having studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.”

For more, visit the state .

  • All languages! You will receive credit for whichever language you attained the seal. At WSU, Spanish, French, and Arabic have their own course codes; all other languages will be coded as WL (World Languages).
  • Please email Dr. Elizabeth Osborne at eosborne1@worcester.edu explaining you have attained the Seal of Biliteracy and in which language. You may need to submit proof of the seal, so make sure you can provide a certificate, a stamp on your diploma, or other such documentation.

  • Your credit should appear on your degree audit within a few days after it is reported to Dr. Osborne, if no further documentation is needed. If you do not see it after a week or so, please follow up.
  • Speak with your teachers and administrators. More and more schools are participating each year, so if there is increased demand from students, schools are more likely to begin offering it. If you speak or have studied Spanish, you can earn credit through the Spanish proficiency test.
